Even though it’s important to use sun protection year-round, it’s ultra-important to stock up on the safest, most effective sunscreens for warm weather months. Purchasing natural sunscreens to use daily, for trips to the beach or pool, while sporting outdoors, or when sending your kids to day camp, means you will not be left burned or damaged by wayward UV rays.

There’s more than one way to get burned by inadequate sunscreens. Sure, chemical sunscreen ingredients are less effective than mineral sunscreens at protecting the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, but did you know that products labeled as mineral sunscreen can still include chemical sunscreen ingredients? Even products that are made only with mineral sunscreen can still harbor other nasty ingredients.

In our third annual sunscreen guide we share tips on identifying sun protection products that contain chemical sunscreen ingredients and other harmful ingredients. This ensures you won’t be doing damage while trying to protect your skin.

Then there are those ingredients that are super healthy and beneficial in sun protection. These beauties often get less coverage than the better known ingredients to avoid. So, it’s time to take notice of what you do want to see in sunscreen products and which are best for your skin.

We’ve personally tried all of the products in our sunscreen guide. Not only are all 31 sunscreens nontoxic, but are our top picks in natural sun protection.

Mineral vs. Chemical

We’ve covered how mineral sunscreens, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are better for our health and protecting our skin against UV damage. We also know that many not-so-safe brands are adding mineral sunscreen ingredients to their chemical sunscreen formulas.

Why would a company use both zinc and chemical sunscreen ingredients in the same product?

Zinc is a star player in the sun protection game. As with other greenwashing methods, some brands use the word “mineral” on a sunscreen label to make the product look safer and more appealing. Mineral sunscreen ingredients are also more expensive than chemical sunscreen ingredients and higher SPF formulations often leave a white cast on skin. Adding a bit of zinc to a chemical sunscreen formula costs less than reformulating to a mineral-based sunscreen that is invisible on skin.

It’s not only a safety issue between mineral and chemical sunscreen ingredients. Zinc is better for sensitive skin.

Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a NYC dermatologist who is working with Promise Organic on the launch of its new baby sunscreen (slated to hit stores in June), says “mineral, or physical, sunscreen is best for sensitive skin because it doesn’t require the absorption that chemical sunscreens do; it works by simply reflecting ultraviolet light. Because of this, mineral sunscreens tend to be less irritating to skin, and better for easily-inflamed or sensitive skin types.”

There are several chemical sunscreen ingredients to avoid in conventional sunscreens. Read more on each of these chemical sunscreen ingredients and refer to the chart when shopping sun protection.

Other Ingredients to Avoid in Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens aren’t the only harmful ingredients showing up in sun protection products. The following toxins make regular appearances in mainstream sunscreen.

Petrochemicals: Used to make a product feel emollient and moisturizing, but we know that ingredients like petrolatum, petroleum jelly, and mineral oil are commonly contaminated with carcinogens, and block pores from releasing toxins and drawing in moisture. They can also lead to skin irritation and acne.

Silicones: This group of ingredients often show up in sunscreens as dimethicone, and are used to create a smooth feel and provide water resistant qualities. Silicones are occlusive, like petrolatum, and clog pores.

Synthetic preservatives: You won’t have trouble finding parabens and methylisothiazolinone (MIT) in conventional sunscreens. These commonly used preservatives have links to neurotoxicity, allergic reaction, fetal impairment, and hormonal disruption.

Synthetic fragrance ingredients: The traditional coconut scent of those decade-old sunscreens may make us nostalgic for childhood summers, but the health risks are no fun. Synthetic fragrance ingredients cause headache, nausea, dizziness, skin irritation, and are associated with asthma and even cancer.

Vitamin A: It’s not a toxic ingredient but retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A) has been shown to be photosensitive, meaning it could increase the chances of developing skin cancer, skin damage, and skin aging when exposed to sunlight. While some skincare experts advise against using sunscreen that contains retinyl palmitate, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) published a study in 2010 that showed no evidence of a link between retinyl palmitate in sunscreens and cancer in humans. Incidental exposure to vitamin A through plant oils that contain it is less an issue than using sunscreens that contain the more concentrated retinyl palmitate.

Healthy Ingredients to Look for in Sunscreen

Safe, natural sunscreens are made with healthy, skin supporting ingredients. Let’s take a look at what you DO want in your UV protection.

Antioxidants: As Tricia Timble says, “the more antioxidants in the product, the better. Antioxidants could boost the body’s natural defense against the formation of UVA-induced free radicals; therefore serving as a second layer of protection against UV radiation that passes through the first layer of UV protection.”

Natural plant oils: Light, nourishing plant oils hydrate and condition the skin. Some natural oils even have a bit of SPF. Red raspberry, olive, and coconut oils all help to bolster UV protection.

Anti-inflammatories: Sun damage causes inflammation. Calming ingredients soothe skin and prevent signs of premature aging. Dr. Nazarian suggests using sunscreens that contain coconut oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter for all skin types. “They are inherently anti-inflammatory and have a very low rate of contact dermatitis or irritation.”

A Note on Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide has come under scrutiny in the past few years. A 2011 Swiss study linked the sunscreen ingredient to damage from inhalation. But there is no inhalation risk with sunscreen lotions and creams.

Then there is concern over titanium dioxide and photoreactivity, or how stable the ingredient remains when exposed to sunlight. When sunscreen ingredients are exposed to sunlight, they can break down and form free radicals. Titanium dioxide shows a slightly higher rate of photoreactivity than zinc oxide.

“Badger has determined that non-nano zinc oxide is the safest active sunscreen ingredient available,” says Ryon Clark, Product Development Project Lead at Badger. “It is widely accepted that the rate of photoreactivity of this raw material is very low in comparison to other sunscreen actives, including titanium dioxide. ”

As far as protection goes, titanium dioxide does not protect against UVA rays as well as zinc oxide, and should be used along with zinc to provide best UVA and UVB defense.

How to Use Sunscreen Effectively

You can purchase a nontoxic mineral sunscreen, but if you aren’t using it properly your skin is still in danger of UV damage. In order to get the most from your sunscreen, Dr. Nazarian advises choosing the most appropriate SPF for your skin (reference our handy SPF selection tips below), using the advised amount of sunscreen, and reapplying appropriately. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying one ounce (about a palm-full) to all exposed skin. And don’t forget to reapply every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.

How to Calculate an SPF That’s Right for You
Fair skin — can stay in the sun 10 minutes before burning
Olive skin — can stay in the sun 15 minutes before burning
Dark skin — can stay in the sun 20 minutes before burning
Multiply the SPF by the number of minutes you can stay in the sun before burning. For example: (SPF) 20 x 10 (Fair skin) = 200 minutes (amount of time you can stay in the sun before burning if you have Fair skin and use an SPF of 20).

Our Criteria

You may be familiar with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Sunscreen Guide and check it each year. It’s a great place to get ingredient and sunscreen usage information. But if you are using the EWG report as a shopping guide there are a few things you should know first.

The EWG Guide provides detailed information on the best sun protection in each category, including mainstream brands, ranked by health hazard, UV protection, and stability. But some sunscreens on the list with low hazard rankings contain ingredients, like silicones and synthetic preservatives, that may not be as healthy as they could be.

While every person is different, and allergic reactions can occur to most anything, you can trust that all products recommended in the Organic Authority Sunscreen Guide are 100% free from harmful ingredients. No scales or ingredient listings to decipher.

As with our sunscreen guides from years past, we only list mineral sunscreens that are free from chemical sunscreen ingredients and other synthetics. Not only are the ingredient listings clean, but we’ve personally tried all 31 sunscreens on our list so we can honestly recommend them to you as safe, effective, and pleasant to use.

If you don’t see a sunscreen on this year’s list that was on last year’s list, the product is no longer available or has undergone reformulation of ingredients. We evaluate each product we recommend annually. If the product’s ingredients no longer meet our standards, we remove it from the list.

You will notice a new section to the product descriptions in the FACE category. This year we’ve begun noting for which skin types each product is best suited. This way you can easily scan through the list and see which natural sunscreens are right for you.

Another addition to this year’s guide is a category dedicated to protecting your pucker. That’s right, a line-up of lip sunscreens that will make you smile, because it’s important to shield lips from UV damage, too.
