OK, vegans–it’s time to laugh in the face of everyone who said that your diet and lifestyle choice is merely a trendy passing fad. Because everyone is getting on the vegan products bandwagon–and by everyone, we mean big box stores. Specifically Target and Wal-Mart. Yeah, those guys.
Recently, the executives of Hampton Creek, the start-up company behind Just Food products including Just Mayo, began researching how to get its products into large chain stores. Two of the larger big box stores Hampton Creek is now working with are Target and Wal-Mart. The company is introducing 43 new vegan retail products to both outlets. “The new items include salad dressings, baking mixes, muffins, pancakes, and brownies,” One Green Planet reports.
Surprised? None of us should be, because according to a report from global market research firm Mintel, “meat and dairy alternatives is one of the 12 key trends set to impact the global food and drink market in 2016.”
And when this information is paired with the fact that more than 100 million Americans say they want to eat less meat, it’s no surprise these chains are beginning to view vegan food as American food staples rather than a trend for tattoo-covered hipsters.
More Companies, More Vegan Products
Now, Hampton Creek isn’t the only company putting healthy vegan delights on American grocery shelves. Other brands, such as SoDelicious and Beyond Meat started selling vegan goods at Target last year. And other brands are jumping onto the quickly-accelerating vegan product train, too. For example, Wendy’s added a vegan bean burger to its menu and Ben and Jerry’s recently launched vegan ice cream flavors.
We hope Target and Wal-Mart continue to make these additions to its product lines in the future. Because if the American public starts to dig these big, vegan changes, we know they’ll get a daily appetite for great tasting, animal-free food, too.
