Holiday Coffee Consumption: Know Your Limit

December 25th, 2008 - Barbara Feiner

With today’s crazy-busy schedule, you may brew a big pot of coffee to help you make it through the day.

But the daily jolt you crave may mask serious sleep problems. Heavy doses of caffeine (500 to 600 mg, or about 4 to 7 cups) will cause sleeping difficulties—and you may also experience an increased heart rate, muscle tremors and headaches.

Joshua Septimus, MD, an internist with The Methodist Hospital in Houston, recommends drinking no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day: about 2 cups of regular coffee.

Stay calm, and enjoy your organic holiday dinner!
