" . . . The quality of the fruits and vegetables available at grocery stores is terrible. Most are laden with toxic substances, such as sulfates on grapes, pesticides . . . many times fruits and vegetables are imported from foreign countries that use toxic pesticides that are illegal in the United States."

Blood Orange Marga-Tea-Tas

Registered dietitian Katherine Brooking, nutrition expert for the Staff Fitness Challenge on ABC’s Live with Regis and Kelly, is a huge fan of winter brunches.

“During the long winter months, brunches offer a wonderful way to share new dishes with family and friends,” she says. “The key is to serve foods and drinks with nutritional value and great taste, and that’s why I like using tea.”

Recent studies show consumption of L-theanine, an amino acid naturally present in tea, stimulates alpha brain waves, which are associated with a relaxed yet alert state of mind. Tea is also an excellent hydration fluid.

All of the ingredients in our weekend recipe should be available at your local natural and organic food store, and prep time is only 5 minutes. If you can’t find blood oranges, which happen to be my favorite citrus fruit, you can substitute regular orange juice.

Blood Orange Marga-Tea-Tas

Makes 2 servings

1/2 cup chilled tangerine-flavored white tea
1/2 cup blood orange juice (about 2 oranges)
1/4 cup tequila
2 tablespoons orange liqueur

In shaker, shake all ingredients. Pour into ice-filled glasses and garnish, if desired, with orange slices.
