Recently I wrote about my quest to live a more sustainable and organic lifestyle. Part of this quest has been to discover organic and chemical free skin care. If you would like to know more about how I qualify this please read my previous blog.
When I started my quest for organic and chemical free skin care I started the search at my local grocery store which happens to be Whole Foods. I went and spoke to their helpful staff and gave them my ideal profile for a skin care line, again chemical free and organic. By the way, I did this on a number of different occasions at different Whole Foods stores, with different staff in and around my city.
Almost every time I was immediately directed to two skin care lines: Aubrey® Organics and Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. As I ran out of personal products like, make-up, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap etc., I started replacing them with products from each line.
I started with Aubrey® Organics Rosa Mosqueta® Rose Hip Moisturizing Cream. I also decided to try their Aloe Essence™ hair care line. All of their products work well; you just need to find out which one is appropriate for your skin type and body chemistry. When using the shampoo I found that I needed to sometimes wash my hair two times for it to become real clean. I however have long hair and you may not need to do this. The Aubrey® Organics line is the most affordable of the product lines I tried at about $15 for their face cream and $8.50 for their shampoo. Additionally their sunscreens are great for summer and they don’t have all of the chemicals. Their Titania Full Spectrum Sunblock SPF 25 is what I used for my fair sensitive skin and it works wonders!
I then moved on to Dr. Hauschka’s Skin Care line and began using their Translucent Make-up, loose Face Powder, Cleansing Milk and Eye Contour Day Cream. I loved all of the products I tried. They work and feel amazing on the skin. The only thing about the line is that it has a high price point. The Cleansing Milk runs about $30 for one bottle. The Eye Contour Day Cream runs about $38. You can see this is not a cheap line. I also tried their Sunscreen Cream SPF 20 which worked great on my sensitive skin.
The third line that I tried is Jurlique. This is an incredible line as well. I did not find this at Whole Foods. I found it through other means of research. It however is pricey like Dr. Hauschka. In fact Jurlique was started by one of Dr. Hauschka’s protégés. All of the herbs are grown organically and biodynamically on the Jurlique herb farm in South Australia. I tried their Day Care Face Cream at about $34 and the Herbal Recovery Gel which is absolutely amazing. It sells for about $67. It is expensive but probably worth it. It even smells like fresh herbs and essential oils.
Depending on your budget and your skin type, I would recommend all of these products. They all work. It just comes down to personal preference.
Another recommendation for healthy skin: drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Doing this will actually help diminish the fine lines around your face and tighten your skin. I have also tried using organic olive oil on my face and virgin coconut oil. Both are great for keeping the skin supple and soft.

I started using the Made from Earth Vitamin Enhanced MOISTURZIER when Made from Earth first came on the market years ago. There are two specific reasons why I continue to use it.
I am sensitive to cosmetic product smells and perfumes – I can only use chemical and fragrence free – it certainly does not make my eyes water – and its ability to be absorbed by the skin without leaving a residue, or greasy feeling. Some skin products have left my face dried out even though labeled as “moisturizers”. The Made from Earth Moisturizer has this wonderful ‘cool’ feeling to it.

I used to have puffy dry skin under my eyes…very sensitive. I’ve used other under eye creams and end up irritating my eyes, since most contain alchohol and other chemicals. What solved my problems was the Made from Earth Olive Night Creme. I tried over night and the next morning felt refreshed. My under eye area was soft, moisturized and HYDRATED. I use it once or twice a week.
I’ve been using it for quite a while now and I’ve seen a dramatic difference. I found that by applying it and then laying down – I kid you not, you’ll see better and immediate results if you do it that way and look great!

With the number of organic and natural skin care options available today, it is difficult to know exactly what to look for. As a natural and organic skin care manufacturer, we are dismayed a the number of products that are not as natural and organic as one would hope. Certainly, one must read the ingredient list on every product to determine if a) the product is full of healthy, vital ingredients, or b) the product consists of the same old chemicals with one or two fashionable herbs thrown in. At the very least, one should check the Skin Deep website for hazard scores of all cosmetics products, as you have mentioned above. At Alchemilla, we create our organic skin care products with as many natural ingredients as possible, using herbs we grow organically on our own herb farm in Oregon. That way, we can be sure that we are incorporating only the purest natural ingredients into our already wonderful formulations. Oh and by the way, our brand receives a 0-2 hazard score on the Environmental Working Group’s “Skin Deep” index.
Neither of the brands that were recommended to you are actually organic or chemical free. Both contain some organic indredients but both also contain isolates that are considered chemicals. Aubrey’s product formulations are stuck in the stone ages of the “natural and organic” movement. He doesn’t properly disclose his ingredients either.
If you want real organic skin care you should try the “Grateful Body” line of skin care which is a small company out of Berkley California. The products are amazing for skin problems like rosacea, acne, and eczema and for people with any chemical sensitivities. All their products are vegan and made from only organic and sustainably wild crafted botanicals. It’s also more affordable than Dr. H which is made all the way in Germany. Because there are no fillers it also lasts a really long time because a little goes a long way. Check it out.

Most Natural Food Stores haven’t really caught on to what Chemical Free and Organic really mean in Body Care. Recently the USDA National Organics Program put out a statement that they would finally be cracking down on all the cheater companies that are using the term “Organic” in there brand names and on their packaging. Organic is for bodycare as it is for food. All the ingredients in the product (no less than 95%) must be organically grown botanical material. There can be no chemical manipulation of these ingredients. The only chemical process that is allowed for a bodycare product to be organic is sapponification, the process of turning vegetable oils into soap. So when a label says “Cocomide Propyl Betain (made from coconuts)” that company is trying to green wash you. This is a chemical compound that could be recreated from any number of oils including petroleum.

Physician’s formula now makes an organic line of make-up called, “Organic Wear.” I believe it was launched about a year ago. Since then they have really expanded the line. They can be found in most drug stores and of course are reasonably priced. I just purchased two of their eye liners today and they are both gorgeous. Two great shades are “Black Woods,” and “Black Olive.”

I just discovered a new organic skincare line called Organoderm, their products are free of harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients. I especially love the organic cleanser even though it has no added fragrance it still has a refreshing clean smell and leaves my skin soft and squeaky clean feeling. I love, love, love it.

It saddens me to think that people still don’t know how to go about finding truly natural and organic products. Just because the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ are in a product label does not mean that this is so. Ever hear of ‘greenwashing’? That’s exactly what this is! It’s unbelievable that many still don’t understand this.
Unless the product is certified by a third party, like the USDA, or ACO, then you are not getting a truly organic product. Look for the organic certification for the purest of products. Otherwise, you might as well go and buy a bottle of $1 shampoo, instead of wasting you money on these ‘fake’ organic products.
