The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, when a New York City labor union pushed for a day off for the city’s hardworking denizens, who commonly toiled 12 hours a day.

By 1894, Congress decreed Labor Day an official federal holiday, to be celebrated the first Monday of every September.

“Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race or nation,” said American activist and labor leader Samuel Gompers, who founded the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in 1881. It was renamed the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1886.
 
Take time to nurture your organic spirit on this very important, not-too-laborious day. And keep this in mind: Both political parties have chosen their candidates (who have, in turn, announced their running mates), so reflect on what work means to you in these challenging economic times. Are you happy? Are you well compensated, or are you struggling to make ends meet? Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago? Regardless of past political allegiances, educate yourself on the candidates’ positions before Election Day.
