Celebrate National Ice Cream Month!

July 16th, 2009 - Barbara Feiner

July is National Ice Cream Month, a culinary celebration designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

About 9% of all milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to make ice cream. According to the NPD Group, a global market research firm, America’s top five flavors are: vanilla (30%), chocolate (10%), butter pecan (4%), strawberry (3.7%) and chocolate chip mint (3.2%).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that whole-milk ice cream accounts for most frozen dessert purchases, (62.4%), followed by low-fat/nonfat ice cream (25%), frozen yogurt (4.4%), water ice (4.1%), sherbet (3.4%) and other (0.8%).

Most of us purchase ice cream in supermarkets (as opposed to scoop shops), so be sure to buy organic brands. My favorite flavors include:

Pair any of these flavors with a Let’s Do Organic Ice Cream Cone, and you have a no-fuss summertime dessert.

i love organic ice cream, but it can be such a pain to find it where i live. i am able to get ahold of organic milk and cream though, so i just started making my own. this is my favorite recipe that i’ve found. you can use an actual ice cream maker or a blender.

1 ½ cup whole organic milk (you can use soy, rice or hemp milk too)
1 ¼ cup organic heavy whipping cream
    1 cup superfine sugar
    4 scoops Boku superfood

whip the 1 ¼ C heavy cream in the blender or with the electric beater until just whipped. then add the 1 C sugar followed by the 4 scoops Boku powder and finally 1 ½ C milk. blend until mixed well

pour or spoon into the electric ice cream machine and churn for anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes OR until it becomes soft ice cream

the time depends on the air temperature

spoon churned ice cream into a plastic freezer container and freeze until firm

it makes a really good ice cream that kinda tastes like green tea ice cream but i like this better since it’s actually pretty good for you, for ice cream
