Farm Aid discredits the good work it’s doing by Acting As a Greenwashing Agent for the Worst of the Worst in Terms of Agribusiness Bad Actors…

One of the reasons that the good food movement has been so successful in the marketplace is the hunger that consumers have for “authenticity.” As stakeholders, we should all call-out hypocrisy when we see it.

Dean, the $12 billion dairy behemoth (yes, larger than Monsanto), that owns 50 dairy brands in the United States, has universally been viewed as a bad actor in the conventional dairy industry that has led to the proliferation of industrial-scale dairies (“factory farms”) and is currently under investigation by the Justice Department for antitrust violations.

Since buying the Silk brand they first abandoned American family farmers for organic soybeans produced in China (the American farmers couldn’t meet Dean’s price demands). They then eventually switched almost the entire Silk product line to conventional soybeans from what was, when they purchased the company, a 100% organic firm.

Their Horizon brand was built with milk from factory farms as large as 10,000-cows (that’s organic???). And they still are heavily dependent on industrial-scale dairies including a number of vertically-integrated corporate-owned operations.

If that’s not bad enough they took the formally exclusive Horizon brand and more recently introduced “natural” Horizon products, aimed at children, made with conventional ingredients.

These are the largest funders and showcased brands at the Farm Aid concert every year. The Cornucopia Institute does not object to Farm Aid wondering Dean Foods.money — but we do strongly object to Farm Aid assisting in their greenwashing campaign.
