If the 'rotten' part was black and hard, you are looking at blossom end rot. There are two basic causes: erratic watering, or lack of calcium in the soil. Try pushing 2-3 oyster shell dietary supplement tablets into the ground a couple of inches deep. Works for me. You could also dissolve a few in some water and use it to water with. If you are also getting cat-facing to go with the big black spot on the blossom end, probably irregular watering is the culprit. The skin gets tough when water is hard to find, then new growth has to push around the tough part. If the situation got really out of hand, splits will form and that marks a good time to pick, before rot really DOES set in. Moreover, if you pull the splitting fruit off the vine, the tomato will turn its attention toward the remaining fruit.
