This past Saturday was the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour. Before I went out for a customary Saturday night of debauchery, I unplugged everything in my apartment, minus the essentials like my refrigerator, so I did my part, but what about everyone else?

Countries and people from all over the world took part. Here are some light and dark photos from places like Sweden, Australia, Switzerland and even the Parthenon in the Greece. It’s pretty amazing to see how much of the world took it seriously, quite frankly, its surprising.

Other locations that took part were Great Britain, Norway, New York City, Rio de Janeiro and many more. I should have taken a picture of my dumpy apartment, it especially looks good in the dark when you can’t see how all the crap furniture I found on the side of the road.

Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, the event encourages people worldwide to unplug their appliances and turn off the lights for just one hour, to give our planet a rest and raise awareness for global warming.

In this toenail-snipping video, singer Alanis Morissette asks you to join the big turn off. Now, I’m a fan of Alanis, she’s super hot, but she’s a very “earthy crunchy” celebrity, so critics of global warming will just consider Earth Hour more hippie blah-blah. We need more presidents, politicians and influential figures trumpeting the cause. No offense Alanis.

In 2008, 50 million people in countries all over the world, from New York and Los Angeles to Rome and Hong Kong and everywhere in between, took part in Earth Hour. So, don’t be a curmudgeon. Turn off the lights, fire up a candle and give the earth a freaking break!

Last year, its estimated 50 million people around the world took part in Earth Hour. It’s a “little” idea that started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The plan was simple. All of Sydney would kill the lights for 1 hour. Imagine the energy-saving, earth-saving impact!

It’s not such a little idea anymore. In 2008 cities all over the world took part, from New York City, Los Angeles, London and Rome to Moscow, Toronto, Manila and Hong Kong, and many more, but this year, Earth Hour 2009 could be even bigger.

Earth Hour is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and goes down at 8:30 PM on Saturday, March 28, 2009, visit EarthHour.org for more. So, will you go dark? I am.
