After much debate and input, the Senate has finally passed the Farm Bill: a five-year, $500 billion bill that is rife with controversy, including major cuts to farm subsidies, land conservation efforts and rejecting a measure that would allow states the rights to require the mandatory labeling of foods or beverages that contain genetically modified ingredients.

As the national discussion over labeling of genetically modified foods heats up with the recent petition submission to the FDA boasting the most signatures in history, news has emerged that Monsanto—the largest manufacturer of GMO seeds and companion pesticides—plans to sue Vermont if the state passes a mandatory labeling law on foods containing genetically modified ingredients.

One of the most hotly debated discussions about our nation's food supply—the issue of genetically modified organisms—has led to a record-breaking number of comments submitted to the FDA, according to the petition campaign titled "Just Label It" that spearheaded the signature gathering and comments. But, by the FDA's math, those 1 million individuals only actually count as 394 separate comments.

Zuccotti Park may have cleared out, but the fed-up have not left their gripes for the street-sweepers. Criticized for being a 'leaderless' movement short on demands, the aftermath of City Halls and Capitol buildings converted into homes for the homeless, the unemployed and the "we're mad as hell and not going to take it anymore" Occupiers last fall has paved the way for a pronounced clarity and specificity that eluded the movement just months ago. One such target of the post-Occupy Occupation: Multinational seed and chemical company, Monsanto.
