Challenging the claims by the biotech industry that genetically modified foods are safe for human health and the environment, a new report presents evidence to the contrary and stirs up controversy, as its authors are genetic engineers themselves.

A group of farmers have appealed a judge's ruling that dismissed the group's case filed against Monsanto in March 2011. The case, brought about by the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, challenged the multinational seed and chemical company's patents on genetically engineered seed technology and the ongoing threats to farmers who frequently face lawsuits from Monsanto for patent infringement.

A major victory came for Monsanto last week as a Manhattan judge hearing the case brought about by a group of organic farmers ruled in favor of the chemical and seed giant by dismissing the allegations from the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association.

Genetically modified organisms have come to be synonymous with corn and soy (and the brands behind the recent proliferation of GMOS such as Monsanto). But the practice of altering DNA and cellular structures doesn't stop at plant seeds; researchers at the Oregon National Primate Research Centre at Oregon Health and Science University have successfully genetically modified monkeys.
