Big news out of New Jersey, particularly if you're a pregnant pig: The state legislature voted to ban gestation crates by a vote of 60 to 5 in the Assembly and in the Senate by a vote of 29 to 4. It now goes to Governor Christie's desk, where he's expected to sign it into law.

Despite the biggest menu changes in Burger King's history recently launched by the chain in efforts to provide healthier options, the Home of the Whopper has announced a summer dessert menu item that's anything but healthy: a bacon sundae.

2012 is looking to be a banner year for pigs, or at least for their great-great-great-grandpiglets. In February, McDonald's announced it would work with its suppliers to phase out the highly criticized use of gestation crates for pregnant pigs.

Iowa Legislature approved a bill last week making it the first state to criminalize clandestine or undercover activity used to collect footage of animal abuse occurring on factory farms. The decision has led to an outcry of concern from animal welfare groups, some of which have successfully aided in the criminal prosecution of abusers caught on tape acquired covertly.
