Greenpeace Targets KFC for Harvesting Endangered Rainforest Trees

Concerned over the use of wood harvested from Indonesia's threatened rainforest in its chicken buckets, activists with Greenpeace International scaled the KFC HQ in Louisville, Kentucky last week and hung up a giant banner that read, "KFC Stop Trashing My Home," to encourage the restaurant chain to find a more sustainable option.

The environmental organization Greenpeace has released a report showing high levels of illegal pesticides in several of the most popular teas. According to the report, "some well-known tea companies are ignoring national laws and either turning a blind eye or being complicit with their suppliers’ illegal conduct."

I’m not sure if this is a great idea or defacing a national treasure—probably a combination of both—but on Wednesday, members of the environmental activist group Greenpeace scaled Mt. Rushmore and dropped that flag next to honest Abe.

The banner, measuring 65 feet high by 35 feet wide, sends a clear message to politicians that climate change must be a top priority and politics as usual are not acceptable. Greenpeace insists the flag was not installed in any way that may damage carvings.

Oh, and just yesterday, Greenpeace took over four coal-fired power stations in Italy.

Coal-burning is a major source of pollution and greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide and mercury, which threatens wildlife, like bald eagles and penguins. This makes coal a prime target for environmental groups. Greenpeace, which exists in 40 countries worldwide, doesn’t like coal. In fact, just last month activists dumped 4 tons of coal in front of a Sheraton hotel in Warsaw, Poland to protest against carbon emissions. And that wasn't the first time they've done it. Previous coal drops include the home of Vice-President Dick Cheney, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Downing Street offices, the Philippines Environment Ministry and Nuon’s headquarters in Amsterdam. So, word to the wise, don’t tick off Greenpeace! Otherwise you’ll be knee-deep in dirty black stuff. Via The News.
