Big news out of New Jersey, particularly if you're a pregnant pig: The state legislature voted to ban gestation crates by a vote of 60 to 5 in the Assembly and in the Senate by a vote of 29 to 4. It now goes to Governor Christie's desk, where he's expected to sign it into law.

If you live in a city, fresh fruits and vegetables can be hard to come by. Sure, most major metropolises have farmers markets and the stuff is trucked in from nearby farms, but, it's just not the same as a backyard garden.

Well, that's changing. More and more city folk are getting together and starting community gardens, take Sydney, Australia for example.

Barack Obama's pick for the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Lisa Jackson, worked on cleaning up New Jersey, one of the most polluted states in the nation, from Feb '06 to Dec '08 as the state's head of Environmental Protection.

But is she ready to go the distance nationally? The super-smart folks at Grist delve into her record in NJ for a rundown of successes and failures during her tenure.

Nutshell: feedback from those who worked with Jackson at the state level on energy and climate policy are favorable. The people who worked in the trenches of toxic clean-ups on the local level? Not so much...

See both sides here.
