Monsanto's controversial restrictive seed-saving policy has landed the agrochemical giant in another legal battle. Filed by the Center for Food Safety and Save our Seeds, the organizations challenged Monsanto's right to sue farmers for alleged patent infringement.

Monsanto will face farmer Vernon Hugh Bowman in front of the Supreme Court, the justices announced last week, agreeing to hear the dispute brought about by an appeal from Bowman—an Indiana soybean farmer targeted by the biotech industry giant.

In the case, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, et al. v. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (PDF file), several states sued the EPA for failure to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from motor vehicles, as required by the Clean Air Act. Yesterday, the Court decided in favor of Massachusetts, et al.

“This ruling is a victory for climate science,” says UA ecologist Scott Saleska, who organized the scientists’ collaboration for the brief. “EPA ignored what is perhaps the most important finding in climate science in the last decade, which is that the rise of global temperature and the anthropogenic increase in atmospheric CO₂ are causally linked. The opening paragraph of the Court majority opinion cited that specific scientific finding.”
