The International Energy Agency estimated last year that lighting accounts for 19% of total global electricity production, resulting in emissions equal to 70% of global car emissions. Many retailers have already pledged to stop selling inefficient light bulbs by 2011 but some have gone even further - Habitat will phase them out by 2009 and Currys have already stopped placing orders for fresh stock. Fluorescents are a better choice. They last longer and will save about 5% on your monthly electric bill. LED’s are even better, but currently a little harder to find. While we are talking about lights, turn them off when you leave the room. CFLs use 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. They also use about 75 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.
