Essential oils are more than just the concentrated fragrant essence of botanicals. Among some of their most noteworthy benefits, the potent aromatic properties in the oils boast healing properties useful in reducing stress, boosting energy, and relieving aches and pains. The plant phytochemicals are also incredibly effective at keeping your skin’s healthy glow, too.

When we find a skincare product that works, we tend to stick with it like a comfortable pair of shoes. But like those favorite shoes that eventually give out, a skin care routine can become ineffective as our skin ages, during the different seasons, and even during different hormonal cycles. Essential oils can help to balance your skin as part of your daily skin care routine or as a healthy addendum.

Adding Essential Oils to Your Cleanser

Essential oils are incredibly concentrated—meaning a little goes a long way. The therapeutic benefits are potent in just a few drops. If you have a skin cleanser you absolutely love but are still noticing a bit of dryness, excessive oil, breakouts or the appearance of fine lines, you can simply add in some essential oils that help balance those conditions. For a 1-ounce bottle or jar of your skin cleanser, add up to 24 drops of your preferred oil or combination of oils.

Make Your Own Oil Serum

Oils like jojoba, almond and coconut (not essential oils) are very effective moisturizing cleansers. Oil lifts dirt out of your pores and helps to make your skin incredibly soft. Much in the same way we need fats in our diet regardless of our weight, even oily-prone skin benefits from oil. You can make your own oil blend by mixing essential oils with a base oil. (Note that coconut will harden at temperatures below 76 degrees F.) In a 2-ounce bottle mix in your base oils (this can be a blend of all three mentioned above or another base oil like sesame, avocado, macadamia, etc) and 35-40 drops of your essential oils, total. That may be just 5-6 drops each if using several.

Make a Steam

A quick facial steam is a great way to open pores, pull out toxins and get the glow. In a large pot bring several quarts of water to a boil. Remove from heat, add 10-20 drops of oil, hang towel over head and steam  over the pot for 10 minutes.
