|Natural Snacking: Hit the Road With Homemade Trail Mix|
|Written by Kirsten Hudson|
During long family road trips I need something to munch on. Chomping on tasty trail mixes filled with different flavors helps fight off boredom and keep my hunger cravings at bay. Who knows how long it will take to reach the next stop? And nobody wants to deal with me when I’m grumpy from hunger, let alone in a confined space.
Why spend money on packaged snacks for road trips, camping excursions or even just day-to-day activities when you can make your own trail mix—and create a healthier snack than many pre-packaged foods? Rustle up this healthy trail mix recipe that you won’t be able to stop eating.
1. Start with a mixture of nuts. Combine unsalted almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts, pecans and sunflower seeds. Mix n’ match the nuts to your heart’s desire.
2. Then add a combination of dried fruits to the nut mixture. Dried fruits add a bit of sweetness and give the mix some color. Combine raisins, cherries, apricots, cranberries and other dried fruits to the mix.
3. Add some chocolate for a pop of flavor. I like to use dark chocolate chips... ahem, for the antioxidants of course. If you can’t find them at the grocery store, chop an organic dark chocolate bar into mini chunks.
Why Trail Mix
Homemade trail mix is a super healthy snack. Nuts contain heart-healthy ingredients including unsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and vitamin E. Dried fruits retain much of their original nutritional value, although it gets diminished somewhat during the drying process. Still, better than eating a candy bar right?
Making your own trail mix not only results in a healthy snack, but you can control the portions. Do you like more nuts than berries? Then choose the quantities to your liking. You can even make different batches for different family members and avoid fights about who ate all of the chocolate chips out of the mix.
Store the mix in a cool, dry location. Try repurposing a glass pickle jar or other container to hold the trail mix. Enjoy!
