Movie popcorn

Summer movie blockbusters are irresistible: The chase scenes, special effects, those superstuds in superhero costumes. What’s not to love? Oh, right. The overwhelming stench of that chemical-laden artificial butter poured over genetically modified corn. It’s bad enough that they charge as much as the ticket price for a bucket of the stuff—it could at least be healthy! Whatever. Sneaking your own food into the theater is way more fun anyway. 

Of course, if going to the movies isn’t quite a movie for you without popcorn, you can easily bring your own. Whether you pop it yourself or buy the bag, make sure it’s organic so that you avoid the GMOs. Spice it up by mixing with a few teaspoons of olive or coconut oil and a good base of nutritional yeast flakes (about ¼ cup) for a nice buttery flavor, and then sprinkle with some of your favorite herbs and spices. Try these combos or make your own.

  • ½ teaspoon curry powder, lots of freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon cumin, ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 tablespoon spirulina powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder (if you like Pirate’s Booty snacks, you’ll dig this one!)

For those suspenseful thrillers, you might want something to gnaw on, like a tough piece of our deliciously unique coconut jerky. It’s the perfect summer snack and really healthy, too.

Call me crazy, but eating melty, globby chocolate bars in the summer is less than appealing. But, a chewy granola bar with chocolate chips… yum.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup almond, cashew or peanut butter

½ cup coconut oil or Earth Balance

¾ cup turbinado sugar

1/3 cup nondairy milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup flour

¼ cup rolled oats

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1/3 cup chocolate chips

¼ cup of your favorite nuts or seeds (or both!)

¼ coconut flakes

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together nut butter, oil and sugar until consistent. Add milk, vanilla and mix. Add flour, oats, baking powder and salt and mix. Fold in chocolate chips, nuts and coconut flakes. The dough will be very thick and you can use your hands to mix it further like bread dough. Spread it out into an 8×8 inch oiled baking pan, pressing into all corners. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until edges are lightly brown and the top is still slightly soft.

*Optional, trade out chocolate for dried fruits

And of course, fresh summer fruits can make a great movie-time snack, fresh or dried.
