The temperatures are rising and the sun is intensifying. But don’t let the weather affect your workout routine. Instead, take into consideration the following four ways to protect yourself while exercising under the summer sun.

1. Hydration

The number one rule is to keep hydrated. High temperatures mean you will sweat more profusely and lose a lot of water. And while it’s important to drink water consistently throughout the day, also be sure to eat foods that are hydrating. Such foods include cucumbers, coconut water, watermelon, cabbage, greens, red bell pepper, pineapple, grapefruit, celery, berries, and carrots.

2. Sunscreen

Even on a cloudy day you can get burned, so don’t underestimate the power of the sun. Be sure to apply sunscreen to skin that will be exposed for a sustained period of time. Unfortunately, many sunscreens are packed with toxic chemicals that are detrimental to your health. Prepare your own homemade version of sunscreen and reap the protective power without the side effects.

3. Timing

Unless you are training for a marathon or event that requires you to be outside during peak daytime heat, avoid exercising between 11 a.m.and 4 p.m. During this time, the day is at its hottest, so instead, plan to exercise in the morning or evening. If you can’t plan around the day’s heat, choose an outdoor area or track that is sheltered by the sun.

4. Attire

To avoid overheating, choose clothing that is loose to allow room for your skin to breathe. Wear light colors, because they reflect heat. Avoid cotton and opt for clothing that draws moisture from your skin and keeps you dry.
