With all these dog biscuit recalls that have been popping up everywhere, it got me thinking – which dog food is safe? I’ve got two hounds who I adore and I’ve got to admit that now more than ever, I’m diligent about what goes into my dogs’ food bowls, and what dog biscuits go in my cupboard. In fact, a dog biscuit recipe can be an easy way to avoid the risks with commercial dog treats.
Luckily, I’m a research freak and I always look into my pets’ food before I purchase. I try to buy the foods and treats with the best ingredients, and avoid buying dog biscuits and foods that are made in China at all costs. Recently though, I’ve been considering baking for my pups. Now, I’m not quite ready to make their food, yet. But I’m ready to dip my toe into the biscuit-baking realm.
The following dog biscuit recipe comes from a Grist blogger. She consulted a bakery that actually makes dog biscuits before em(bark)ing on her baking journey. This recipe is simple and the treats will stay fresh for up to two weeks in an airtight container. I’m ready to try it!
Peanut Butter Dog Biscuit Recipe
Yield: about three dozen large biscuits
1/2 cup natural, unsalted peanut butter
1 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or use the oil that has separated from the natural peanut butter inside the jar)
1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer that has a paddle attachment, combine the peanut butter, water and oil. Next, add the flours gradually and mix until everything comes together to form a smooth dough. This should take two to three minutes. (Note: This can also be done by hand. Kneading takes about six to eight minutes.)
Now all you’ve got to do is roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface (make sure it’s about 1/4-inch thick), cut out biscuits using a floured cookie cutter and transfer the dog biscuits to your prepared baking sheets. Leave at least 1/4 inch between each dog biscuit.)
Bake the dog treats until they are golden brown on the bottom and edges. This will take about 12 to 18 minutes. Cool and serve to your waggily friends!
