In support of Vegetarian Week, Chef Jamie Oliver wants to help you go meat-free for five days.
The celeb chef kicks off his #5DayVeggieChallenge on May 14 in which he’s urging his fans to adopt a plant-friendly diet. For less than $3 USD fans can sign up on his website for a whole week’s worth of recipes, including eight brand new veggie dishes created by Oliver just for the challenge.
According to the chef’s website, the challenge is “all about celebrating the joy of seasonal, fresh and colourful veggie cooking. It’s about switching up the routine and discovering new ideas to make vegetables really sing.”
The challenge will also include personal messages from Oliver throughout the week, as well as the opportunity to connect with other veggie challengers. Challengers can expect a meal planner that includes at least five portions of fruits and veggies per day, as well as a shopping list to help you out.
And for those who are skeptical about receiving enough protein during the challenge, Oliver’s website ensures that the daily meal plan has enough of each major food group.
Challengers can expect yummy dishes like sweet potato quesadillas and throw-it-all-in veggie noodles that Oliver promises will be easy for those who are busy and who also don’t consider themselves much of a chef in the kitchen.
As for why the “Super Food” chef is hosting such a challenge, according to his website, Oliver wants to “inspire everyone – veggies and meat-lovers alike – to embrace the wonderful world of veg, every day! Knowing how to make veg and fruit the stars of the show is such an exciting way to cook. Launching the challenge is also about connecting people in kitchens across the country on a veggie journey, sharing tips, reacting and discovering new things together – I can’t wait!”
Oliver also adds that “eating more veg is always going to put you in a good place. It’s good for your wallet, good for the planet and it can be really good for your health.”
He’s right. Eating more fresh fruits and veggies means you’ll be feeding your body a number of important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants — much more so than meat, dairy, and processed foods — plus research has shown that eating a vegetarian diet could not only increase your lifespan and quality of life, but also decrease greenhouse gas emissions and save habitat for endangered species.
