Just ’cause you like beer don’t mean you ain’t classy. And even when you’re rockin’ a baggy jersey and a smudged black eye, you still don’t have to settle for cheap brews out of a can. In honor of the Super Bowl, here are a few beer-based cocktails that’ll look elegant in your hand even as your mouth is cursing out the ref.
Bonus: Embrace your classiness, skip the “cold as the Rockies” schlock and spring for an organic microbrew.
Watch ’em gasp as you fill a champagne flute halfway with stout, then top it off with organic sparkling wine. The result is smooth, light, nutty, fizzy and quite amazing.
The most cocktail-like of beer cocktails, this one requires 2 ounces of rye whiskey, 1 ounce of a nice bitter IPA, 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth. Mix the rye and vermouth in a shaker, then add them to a martini glass with the beer. Garnish with a slice of orange.
Cure for expensive cocktails, that is. Fill a pint glass with ice, and add 2 ounces of ginger liqueur or ginger syrup, and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Fill to the top with light lager. You’d never know you were drinking cheap beer (which, most of the time, is what “light lager” means).
A classic. Mix equal parts lemonade and light lager, add a little club soda and enjoy. Or, with a few variations, make it a Monaco or a Snakebite.
Another classic, this one lives somewhere between the Bloody Mary and the Red Beer. Equally delicious the next morning. Run a slice of lime around the rim of a chilled glass, then dip it in salt. Fill with ice, the juice of one lime, 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, 1-2 dashes of Tabasco and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Mix well with a spoon, then fill the glass with Mexican beer.
Dark, fragrant and surprisingly lovely. Pour a 12-ounce beer into a 16-ounce glass, and add one ounce of coffee liqueur.
