DIY ginger beer recipe

What could be more rewarding than a frosty beer after a long day? Oh yes, one that you’ve brewed yourself! This DIY ginger beer recipe is reminiscent of ginger ale. It’s a refreshing brew that everyone can enjoy all year long.

Although it tastes a lot like ginger ale, it’s important to point out that there is some alcohol. Giner all is is essentially carbonated water flavored with ginger. Ginger beer goes through the fermentation process, creating alcohol.

However, ginger beers contain less than 0.5-percent alcohol, which meets FDA requirements for a non-alcoholic beverage. If you normally let your kids have kombucha, this DIY ginger beer recipe should be acceptable as well, especially if they have an upset stomach. This DIY ginger beer recipe calls for fresh ginger and raw sugar, both of which further the beer’s flavor and make it far more rewarding in terms of originality and health. Enjoy!

DIY Ginger Beer Recipe

Makes about 8.5 cups

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 cup raw sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 7 cups warm water
  • 1/8 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2-gallon (2 liters) plastic bottle
  • Funnel
Directions: In a saucepan over medium heat add the ginger, raw sugar, and 1/2 cup of water. Boil until the sugar dissolves. Place the saucepan aside and let it sit until it reaches room temperature. Strain the mixture and discard the ginger pieces.
Place the funnel into the open bottle and pour in the warm water, yeast, lemon juice, and ginger syrup. Close the lid and shake the bottle until all is evenly combined and dissolved.
Loosen the lid so that it is still secure in place but can release some pressure. Place the bottle in a place where the temperature is controlled and it receives no direct sunlight.
Wait 2-3 days until the desired carbonation is achieved. Check on it every day to prevent the bottle from exploding — unfasten the lid to let out air pressure and then re-fasten.
