New Planet Beer out of Boulder, Colorado is one of the only truly gluten-free beers on the market, brewing guaranteed gluten-free craft beer for the growing community of people being diagnosed with Celiac Disease (CD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gluten intolerance, or for those who are choosing a gluten-free diet. Now, they’re taking it a step further, working on becoming Non-GMO Certified.
When the company’s founder, Pedro Gonzalez, first discovered he had Celiac’s Disease, he thought his craft beer drinking days were over. What started as a personal quest for a decent brew quickly turned into the launch of New Planet—a business founded on brewing great tasting gluten-free beer crafted with flavor in mind.
New Planet Beer offers a full line of gluten-free beers, including a pale ale, an amber ale, a blonde ale, a raspberry ale and a Belgian ale, all carefully brewed to prevent contamination and rigerously tested. The beers are available in major liquor stores in 47 states, though the company is based in micro-brew heaven: Colorado.
In 2012, the government released new rules governing the labeling of gluten-free beers, which disqualified many that weren’t following the strict new standards. But New Planet Beer stepped up to the plate, listing all its ingredients right on the label and including only naturally gluten-free ingredients. The comapany’s website states, “If a beer has a conventional label… it’s a conventional beer.”
The company is now looking to source all non-GMO certified ingredients—which has proved to be a tough feat. A company representative told me at an event recently that they had tried to source non-GMO corn, but it had proved nearly impossible, so the company is removing corn from all its recipes to ensure its gluten-free and non-GMO status.
You won’t see the Non-GMO Certified label on their beers just yet, but look for it in the coming months.
