Let’s hear it for craft brewers! Why do we like them so much? For one thing it’s easier to know exactly what’s going into your beer.
For a long time, gluten-free beer drinkers were limited to home brewing (and growing their own hops), but a new trend in brewing has opened up more options. Thanks to the small brewing industry, those following a gluten-free diet can partake in thecraft beer merriment!
Here are three gluten-free beer options from craft brewers who understand the wheat-free life.
New Planet is the only Colorado-based brewery making guaranteed gluten-free beer. They offer several different kinds of beer including pale ale, amber ale, blonde ale, rasbperry ale, Belgian ale and brown ale. The ingredients lists of these beers are slightly longer than those of more traditional beers — sorghum extract, brown rice extract, molasses, tapioca maltodextrin, caramel color… — but the taste is worth it. The pale ale has recieved rave reviews, and the variety in New Planet’s beer offerings is not something you’ll find with every brewery.
Lakefront Brewery is one of many brewers that have only one gluten-free beer to offer… but oh, what a beer! New Grist is a pilsner-style gluten-free beer brewed from sorghum, rice, hops, water and yeast. The is a light and fruity taste. It doesn’t quite imitate a traditional beer, but New Grist is quite pleasant when consumed cold.
Ipswich Ale distributes the Celia Saison, created by the Alchemist’s John Kimmich, who began brewing the gluten-free beer when his wife was diagnosed with celiac disease. Perhaps it’s the labor of love that makes this beer so fantastic. John made sure to work with a style that would highlight the unique flavor of sorghum rather than mask it, like so many attempt to do. The Belgian saison style works perfectly; the resulting gluten-free beer is floral, hoppy, and delicious.
