From her thriving film career to raising money for various animal advocacy programs, actress Kate Mara leads a busy lifestyle. Which is why, in order to stay balanced and healthy, she adheres to a set of “personal truths” that she recently shared with Shape Magazine.

“I’m not a person who plans ahead,” the “House of Cards” star told the magazine. “I enjoy the here and now as much as I can. I’m at my best when I’m not worrying about the future.”

And no doubt her “personal truths” help ground her so that she doesn’t have to. Luckily, Mara’s essentials are simple and relatable. Here’s how the actress remains fit, healthy, and motivated despite her hectic schedule.

 She Practices Ballet

“My favorite workout spot is this amazing ballet and Pilates studio called Ballet Bodies in L.A.,” she said. “My trainer, Romi, is a ballerina. I go there five days a week when I’m home. Some days I do the ballet workouts, other days I do Pilates…You have to focus so intensely when you’re doing ballet moves, and it’s a great way to clear your brain. Also, it’s about taking time for treating yourself. For me, it’s the equivalent of getting a massage.”

Ballet plus Pilates packs a pretty strong punch. In fact, some might argue that ballet is actually a combination of Pilates with endurance training. Both methods build muscle and agility and increase strength while working the core and lower body. Plus, anyone who’s tried a barre class knows that booty burn lasts for days.

She Eats a Vegan Diet

According to the article, Mara started eating vegan five years ago after reading “The Beauty Detox Solution” by Kimberly Snyder.

“It’s about how our bodies are not meant to digest animal products and what we should be eating instead,” the actress said. “It made a lot of sense to me. I’ve always had a pretty sensitive stomach, but when I cut animal products out of my diet, I felt so much better.”

The benefits of eating a plant-based diet are numerous. From meals rich in important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants — much more so than meat, dairy, and processed foods — to helping to reduce cholesterol and obesity, eating vegan is definitely one of the healthiest things you can do for your bod.

She’s Passionate About Animals

When she’s not acting, Mara is working to help the cause of animals.

“As I get older I have started thinking, ‘What can I do to help someone and leave the world a better place in some way?’ Working for animals is very fulfilling,” she said. “I get much more out of it than anything else. Actors are given a platform. I feel like we don’t deserve to have it if we’re not going to use it to do good.”

Volunteering — although typically a selfless act — is actually known to be good for you. Studies have shown that people who volunteer for a cause are, in fact, happier than those who don’t.

Connecting to people through a cause, as well as the fulfillment experienced by helping out those less fortunate, help improve one’s confidence, self-esteem, and also works to alleviate depression and anxiety. Factor in animals, who are known to decrease worry, pain, and anxiety, and there’s no wonder Mara feels so fulfilled and inspired.
