The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that exposure levels to pesticides are becoming too high in children, and parents need to be more vigilant in decreasing common risk factors. The highest exposure risk comes from ingesting pesticides in food. But exposure also comes from household and lawn products. Recent studies show that limiting pesticide exposure by eating only pesticide-free foods greatly limits the excretion of pesticide metabolites--meaning kids who eat only organic produce are at significantly less risk of exposure.

More than 15 million pounds of dyes are used in processed food each year--a five-fold increase over 1955 levels--in spite of research that has linked the dyes with hyperactivity and other behavioral issues in children, as well as increasing the risk for certain types of cancer. Two moms, health and wellness experts Erica Reid and Latham Thomas, recently partnered with Healthy Child Healthy World to petition Kellogg's to take artificial food dyes out of the brand's fruit snacks. The petition has more than 75,000 signatures so far, with a goal of at least 100,000.

For the first time, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has weighed in on organic foods for children. Its news release was widely covered in the national media.
While the AAP should be commended for acknowledging the potentially harmful effects of pesticide residues on conventional foods, their report—and associated press coverage—is seriously flawed in its basic approach to agrochemical contamination in our food supply and the associated threat to public health.

Growing up (and still!), Halloween was my favorite holiday. I would plan my costume months in advance and didn’t sleep the day before the spooky October 31. My mom would decorate and bake all sorts of Halloween goodies. She always headed the Halloween parties at school, so I was privy to all the fun crafts she concocted before the big day.
