Secret to the Cold and Flu Season

This morning I watched NBC’s Today Show and they did a segment on,  “How to Prevent a Cold.” This of course immediately caught my attention, because I am often asked how I keep my immune system running strong during the cold and flu season. Interestingly enough, the Today’s show expert, revealed her #1 secret for the cold and flu season, which happens to be exactly what I do and teach my clients to do. I’ll reveal what it is in a moment.

I firmly believe eating a diet rich in organic foods is an excellent form of prevention, particularly in a western world where medical treatments can be extremely expensive! If you think organic foods are costly, think about the expenses associated with future doctor visits, prescriptions and pain management-and the list goes on if you don’t take 100% responsibility for your health and become prevention-proactive now!

So when I get the above question: how do I keep my immune system running strong during the cold and flu season? My first response is always the same. I eat as many organic foods as possible. I can honestly say, since switching to a nearly all-organic diet, my immune system’s strength has greatly improved. I used to get severe head and sinus colds that would keep me up at night because I couldn’t breathe, keep me home from work, and last for weeks. Sound familiar? Now I get sick less than once a year, and if it happens, my symptoms are drastically less severe and are simply more of an irritation then a cold.

So as you may have guessed it, this expert’s #1 secret is, get into prevention.  Eat a diet that is rich in antioxidants to boost your immune system. This means eating as many bright colored fruits and vegetables (of course choose organic!) that are rich in antioxidants so your immune system can do its job – protect you against common colds, flues and serious illnesses. In fact there is one thing that health officials agree on: the common cold, flu and serious diseases can not take a hold of a healthy immune system. And why choose organic? Science is proving that organic foods are healthier for you and contain higher counts of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants.

In fact nutritionists recommend that we eat about 5,000 ORAC units per day to significantly boost antioxidant activity and reduce free-radical damage. ORAC units (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), are a standardized measurement for a substance’s total antioxidant power. Antioxidants neutralize oxygen fragments, or free radicals. When excessive free radicals build up in our bodies, they can cause severe cell damage that may lead to degenerative diseases and premature aging. Food additives, pesticides, pollution, tobacco smoke, x-rays, stress and sunlight, among other factors, can contribute to free-radical formation in the human body. Antioxidants can help prevent this cellular damage.

Eating 5,000 ORAC units per day is the equivalent of eating 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which most people fall far short of (including me). One serving of fruits and vegetables provides approximately 500 ORAC units. Think about it, most people feel that if they eat three servings of organic fruit and veggies per day, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, they are doing great! The thought of consuming 10 servings a day, nearly impossible (even for me)!?!

So, recently I added a powerful antioxidant superfood supplement to my diet to fortify my prevention efforts. Berry Radical Antioxidant is a certified organic superfood, packed with 10 of the world’s most potent antioxidant superfoods: certified organic raw cacao (chocolate), coffee berry, acai berry, gogi berry, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate, olive, dunaliella salina,  and marine microalgae, which all support healthy immune function and protect cells.

This product contains an amazing quantity of ORAC units. One serving of Berry Radical contains more than 4,000 ORAC units, and one box of Berry Radical offers 128,000 ORAC units. This is equal to 11 pounds of blueberries, 17.6 pounds of raspberries, 22 pounds of strawberries, 7 bottles of mangosteen juice, 10 bottles of gogi juice and 24 bottles of noni juice. So if you consume one serving of Berry Radical, you will undoubtedly get your remaining suggested intake of 1,000 ORAC units if you consume two servings of bright colored fruits and vegetables throughout the day. If you don’t , simply take another serving of Berry Radical!

Wow! When I found out about Berry Radical Antioxidant, I knew it was a no-brainer and had to have it! And so should you, buy it now.

With this much antioxidant power packed into one box, you cannot afford to go without it.

How do I use this superfood? I add one package per day to my morning smoothie. Here’s my simple recipe:
Antioxidant-Rich Berry Radical Smoothie

1 package Sambazon’s Organic Acai Smoothie (found in the frozen section of your grocery store, usually next to the frozen berries)
1 banana
1 to 1 1/2 cups organic vanilla soy milk (depends on desired thickness)
1/4 cup frozen organic blueberries or your favorite berries (for sweetness and flavor)
1 packet Berry Radical Antioxidant Superfood
1 cup organic granola (optional)

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high until smoothie reaches a smooth consistency. Drink, or pour over your favorite organic granola, and enjoy!

Buy your package of Berry Radical now. Remember one box is the equivalent of 128,000 ORAC units. This is equal to 11 pounds of blueberries, 17.6 pounds of raspberries, 22 pounds of strawberries, 7 bottles of mangosteen juice, 10 bottles of gogi juice and 24 bottles of noni juice.
