Every day our dogs remind us to appreciate life. From snuggling to playing to barking at unseen intruders, they approach each task with the same joy and enthusiasm as the time before, reminding us to forget that never-ending to-do list, and enjoy today! Vivacious and full of life, there’s nothing we want more as dog owners than to help them stay that way (although sometimes I wish they were just a little less enthusiastic about my shoes). One way to keep them healthy is through diet. It’s easier than you think to have them eating well, even if you’re short on time.

Dogs eatingGeez, Mom, this again? That’s the look my dogs give me if I’ve fed them kibble for several days in a row, and I don’t blame them. If you’ve selected the right dog food, your pup will benefit from high-quality ingredients… but they are certainly far from fresh. And imagine if you were forced to eat the same meal day after day – do you really think you’d be fulfilling all your nutritional requirements? No, we eat a wide variety of foods to meet our needs, and your dog needs that too.

Dog Food
I don’t know about your dogs, but feeding time is pretty much Lady and Darby’s favorite time of day. Or at the very least, it’s tied with walk time. And when I come home from work. And playtime. Okay, they’re enthusiasts for life, what can I say? But they are definitely big fans of food, and a doggie’s diet is tied to their long-term health, just like with humans. So in order to ensure that my pups continue to enjoy their lives so fully, I did some investigation into their commercial food.

Dogs Donate Fur for Oil Spill PDF Print E-mail

dog hair

Dogs around the world are giving the hair off their backs to help clean up one of the worst oil spills in history. Groomers have gathered the hair trimmings from their doggie salon floors, as individuals collect the fur that their dogs are shedding, all sending it along to Matter of Trust, a San Francisco non-profit organization. This fur, along with human hair and donated nylons, is being stuffed into casings to make mats that will help contain the recent Gulf oil spill.

Dog Being Scratched

It’s summertime, and as pet owners we know that also means it’s flea time. Up until now, I’ve been lucky enough to avoid the pests. My last dog Tony, or Tony Bologna as he was known to friends, was an elderly fellow who wanted little to do with tall grass or shrubs. He was content with the concrete, thank you very much! But my two youngins have a propensity for getting into trouble… and adore rubbing on whatever greenery is nearby. Fleas, I fear, are in my future.

Bully Stick

There are few things more classic than a dog and his bone, and the idea of using these leftovers may seem like an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to give your dog something to gnaw on, but before you start sucking up to the local butcher, you should be aware of the potential dangers. Nowadays, many veterinarians recommend against them, as each kind of bone poses unique problems.

When my puppy Lady gets a squeak toy, it’s like she's got a box of cereal with a prize in the middle. She immediately tears through the thing to find the plastic squeaker in the center -- and then chews it to shreds. As you can imagine, that results in her ingesting a ton of chemicals that aren’t good for her -- PVCs in the plastics as well as pesticides and hormones used to make other materials -- and, of course, it produces a lot of waste.
