Coral Throw Pillows

They come in different shapes, sizes, patterns, textures, and colors. They have so much power, yet, they’re often underappreciated. What am I talking about? Throw pillows. Yes, throw pillows have power. Here are three home decor design tips on how to bring the power of throw pillows into your home:

1. Keep your base neutral

Whether you’re deciding on a couch color or the color of your new bedspread, try to stay with neutral colors or colors that can be matched easily (tan, white, black, navy blue, brown). Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but keeping your base neutral allows for easy makeovers down the road. It’s a lot easier to change the pillows on your couch or bed than it is to change the actual piece. Trends change quickly, and you’ll want to have the ability to change with them.

2. Color and Patterns

Don’t be afraid to add pops of color and to mix and match patterns. Darlene from Fieldstone Hill Design gives us a great example in the before and after picture featured in this post. Do you see how she used different colors and patterns, yet they work together? It’s an inspired look. Also, notice that the couch is a neutral color. If she decides to change her color scheme next year, she could easily do so by changing the throw pillows.

3. Texture, Shape, and Size

When choosing pillows, experiment with incorporating different textures, shapes, and sizes. This gives your pillows “depth” and provides a layered look (just like you would layer an outfit). You can layer them just like this master bedroom that was featured over at Young House Love. The pillows add warmth and texture to the room. It also gives it an elegant and luxurious look like you would see in a hotel.

Now that you’re inspired, consider buying handmade pillows from Etsy rather than buying from big box stores. You could even make your own pillows, too. Check out our Tutorial: Upcycle an Old Sweater into a Cute Throw Pillow. There are so many options to choose from, the possibilities are endless.
