Turnips aren’t exactly a vegetable that you eat everyday. But, low in calories and high in nutrition, they most certainly deserve to be a bigger part of your diet. And what better way to convince you of turnip’s versatility and charm than with a homemade baked turnip fries recipe? You don’t need to fry your fries or even use a version of potatoes to revel in that finger lickin’ goodness.
Turnips are a root vegetable with white and purplish skin. They have a sweet and snappy flavor akin to that of cabbage. In one medium turnip there are only 34 calories, 233 milligrams of potassium, 1.1 grams of protein, 2.2 grams of dietary fiber, 42 percent of the RDA of vitamin C, and a good amount of calcium, iron, vitamin B-6, and magnesium.
When purchasing turnips, choose ones that feel heavy for their size and are firm. As turnips grown, they tend to bear a woody texture, which you don’t want, so opt for ones that are less than 4 inches in diameter. You can store turnips in a plastic bag for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
The great thing about these turnip fries is that you don’t have to worry about spiking your blood sugar levels or packing in the fat and calories of regular French fries. These are so low in calories that you can easily finish all of them in one sitting – no shame (or post-nosh food baby) necessary.
Oven Baked Turnip Fries Recipe
- 4 turnips, sliced into ½-inch French fries
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Juice of half of a lime
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Add the sliced turnips to a mixing bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil and season with the chili and garlic powders. Use clean hands to toss and massage the turnip slices so that the seasonings are evenly coating each and every fry.
Lay the turnips out onto a parchment-paper lined baking sheet. Make sure they do not overlap one another. Bake for a total of 30 minutes. After 15 minutes, flip the fries, and then continue baking for the remaining 15 minutes.
