From yoga and Pilates classes to regular meditation sessions, we’ve known for a while that actress and future Duchess Meghan Markle leads a healthy lifestyle. So it wasn’t that much of a surprise when it was recently revealed the future royal also eats a (mostly) vegan diet.
Speaking to Best Health the former “Suits” star shared that she eats a plant-based diet during the week.
“When I’m filming, I’m conscious of what I eat. I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends,” she said. “But at the same time, it’s all about balance. Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things.”
As for which plant-based foods Markle prefers to eat regularly, she previously told Good Housekeeping, “Hummus, carrots—because I love them and so does my dog, Bogart, strangely—a green juice, almond milk, for sure, and a chia seed pudding I make every single week.”
While Markle might not be a full-on vegan, adhering to a part-time plant-based lifestyle has its benefits. According to a study by Harvard University, reducing your consumption of animal products while upping your intake of fruits and veggies can have similar nutritional benefits of a healthy “full time” vegan diet.
As we know by now not only do fresh fruits and veggies provide important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants — much more so than meat, dairy, and processed foods — a vegan diet is known to reduce cholesterol and obesity, as well as helps treat and prevent type 2 diabetes.
Then, of course, there’s the environmental factor. According to One Green Planet, eating vegan for one day can save 1,500 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square feet of land, and 20 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Multiply that by five days, and Markle is definitely doing her part by eating mostly vegan.
The star’s concern for the planet is pretty fitting considering she and Prince Harry recently announced they would like guests to donate to their preferred charities rather than buying gifts for their wedding. Among the seven charities selected is Surfers Against Sewage, a U.K.-based “marine conservation and campaigning charity, which inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches, waves and wildlife.”
With so many people worldwide obsessed with Markle’s latest fitness and style trends, we can’t help but hope that her health-conscious diet will rub off on her loyal following. Or, at least, her royal family-to-be?
