A Quick Organic Lunch


I made my weekly Whole Foods Market run a few days ago, and among the goodies I picked up were two cans of organic soup from Pacific Natural Foods. I’m on deadline with a book edit, so I was planning ahead for a few easy-to-prepare lunches.


I’ve long used the Tualatin, OR-based company’s broths as soup starters, but I hadn’t noticed its line of ready-to-eat, artisan organic soups, which are made entirely from USDA-certified organic meats, including beef, chicken and pork.

I opted for the Split Pea with Ham & Swiss Cheese and Spicy Black Bean with Chicken Sausage. The remaining six varieties are Beef Steak & Fusilli Pasta, Minestrone with Beef Steak, Chicken & Penne Pasta, Savory Chicken & Wild Rice, Spicy Chicken Fajita and Savory White Bean with Smoked Bacon.

“According to the research, 65% of consumers want a guarantee that all meat products are free of added growth hormones and antibiotics, and that animals are humanely raised,” says company spokesperson Kevin Tisdale. “We grow many of the ingredients we use in our products on our own organic and sustainable farms.”

The soups have a 24-month shelf life and a pull-tab top. Suggested retail price for a 14.5-oz. can is $2.99 to $3.49 at mainstream grocery and natural food stores.
