4 Weird Food Trends: Are They Worth the Wait?

Reminiscent of pitching a tent to score killer concert tickets, weird food trends are certainly hitting their stride – both in popularity and entertainment value. As hundreds line up for the latest calorie-ridden craze, we have to ask: are they worth the wait?

First, let’s review the latest weird food trends to surface on the Internet (and on our plates):

1. There’s the cronut: a croissant-donut hybrid that’s rolled in sugar and glazed.

2. Then there’s the Ramen burger: a burger with a bun made of ramen noodles.

3. There’s also the pizza burger, a bacon cheeseburger with a bun made from pepperoni pizza (pictured above),

4. And let’s not forget the Mac Attack, a burger with a bun made from fried macaroni and cheese. (Can’t you just feel your arteries clogging?)

So what is it about these bold and borderline-crazy food trends that compel us to stand in line for hours?

Exclusivity. The experience of going to that “one” place that sells that “one” food everyone’s raving about gives you bragging rights – like being part of an exclusive club.

Urgency. Food trends that are only available for a limited time create a sense of urgency, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you don’t want to miss.

Curiosity. Let’s face it – the more horrifying the food trend sounds, the more we want to try it. It’s like the foodie version of skydiving.

There’s also a sense of indulgence when it comes to weird food trends. After months upon months of healthy eating, there’s nothing quite like rewarding yourself with a treat as artery-clogging as a pizzaburger.

Like with any trend, there are skeptics who don’t understand why anyone would get up at the crack of dawn for a limited-edition pastry – but in an industry where it feels like everything’s been done, it’s a refreshing change of pace.
