More Food Recalls Announced

As of 9 p.m. yesterday, 486 cases of peanut butter-related salmonella infection have been reported in 43 U.S. states, up from 474 last Friday. Click here for background information.


Companies continue to issue recalls, and the FDA is regularly updating its searchable list—a resource we urge our readers to use.

Our continuing coverage will focus on natural and organic products—those being recalled, as well as those deemed safe to eat.


Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway has recalled three products that contain peanut butter:

  • Orchard Valley Organic Bark Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream (sold only in Safeway’s “Nut Hut” kiosks in various U.S. stores)
  • Eating Right Kids Apples With Peanut Butter (6.75-ounce 3-pack unit with Use By Dates of 12/27/08 to 2/2/09 and UPC: 0-7983-70175-2)
  • Eating Right Kids Celery With Peanut Butter (6.75-ounce 3-pack unit with Use By Dates of 12/27/09 to 2/2/09 and UPC: 0-79893-70172-1)

Customers should discard these products or return them to their local store for a full refund. If you have questions, please call (800) SAFEWAY.

No illnesses have been reported, and no other Safeway products are currently subject to the recall. The company has removed any and all national brands previously identified in the recall from its 1,738 U.S. and Canadian stores.

General Mills

Minneapolis-based General Mills has voluntarily recalled LÄRABAR Peanut Butter Cookie snack bars (not organic) and JamFrakas Peanut Butter Blisscrisp flavor snack bars (organic). A combined 15,000 cases of product are involved.

These energy bars are widely found in mainstream supermarkets and natural/organic food stores.

No Recall: Barbara's Bakery Products

Petaluma, Calif.-based Barbara’s Bakery, a mainstay at natural and organic food stores, reports all of its products are unaffected by the recall.


The company makes a wide assortment of natural and organic products, including granola bars and the popular Puffins cereals.
