The Kinfolk of Gluten-Free Food? A New Upscale Magazine to Launch

Good news gluten-free food lovers: there’s about to be a high end magazine just for you.

While the gluten-free crowd used to find themselves on the outskirts of society, today you can get everything from cupcake mixes to croissants, and it doesn’t always involve going to an out of the way, obscure, co-op. And soon, you will be able to have your very own magazine.

GFF– which of course stands for Gluten-Free Forever – is coming out of San Francisco (no shocker there) and is the brainchild of Chronicle and SF Magfood writer food writer Erika Lenkert, photographer Maren Caruso, and designer Catherine Jacobes.

Think of this as your upscale, niche food magazine, in the same vein as titles like Lucky Peach and Kinfolk. But the benefit? It will be 100 percent gluten-free. Which means you don’t need to flip through the pages thinking, “can I make that with almond flour instead?”

“There’s tons of gluten-free community on the Web, but no one’s really created a print publication that’s beautiful and inspiring for people who love food,” Lenkert told Eater. Your coffee table will be empty no longer!

There’s a current Kickstarter campaign to get the magazine off the ground, and for $5 you get a special gluten-free cookie recipe sent to you. $15 snags you the premiere issue. For the first year, the goal is to publish quarterly, and after that, every two months. Printed on eco-friendly paper – another plus – the magazine is set to debut in fall of 2014 (if the funding happens).

Is this a magazine you will want to read? As they put it in their Kickstarter campaign, “think Kinfolk magazine in format, but with bolder color and more urban design.” And gluten-free food of course. So the answer is, yes. And your non gluten-free friends will probably want to read it as well, because at the end of the day, this magazine is about good food done well, from chocolate chip cookies to paella.

I’m personally hoping that the focus will be on simple recipes, and not an assortment of gums and obscure ingredients that most people don’t have access to. From the looks of it, they’re certainly on the right track, both content-wise and visually. There is plenty of good food out there that happens to be gluten-free, and finally there might be a magazine to celebrate it all.
