Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose tomato is the ugliest of all?

With so many hideous entries to its Ugly Tomato Contest, Plant City, FL-based Santa Sweets couldn’t pick just one. The company awarded 10 prizes for some of the most unsightly tomatoes (see photo, right), which actually make its famous UglyRipes look pretty good. The owners of this “repulsive” produce received a box of UglyRipes.

The Ugly Tomato Contest challenged tomato growers to submit pictures of their ugliest tomatoes to give UglyRipes a run for their money. Green, red and some shades in between, the lumpiest, most oddly shaped tomatoes were submitted by home cultivators.

“I’ve been in the tomato-growing business for over 60 years, and I have never seen tomatoes this ugly!” says Joe Procacci, CEO of Procacci Brothers Sales Corp., Santa Sweets’ parent company.

In addition to conventional tomatoes, Santa Sweets is one of the largest growers of USDA-certified organic tomatoes.
