As a kid, puppy chow or muddy buddies, was my favorite snack to nibble on. It was chocolaty, sugary, and crispy all at once. However, these days, it’s not really a snack I can get away with because of said sugar and chocolate – to say nothing of the butter!
However, that’s not going to stop me from enjoying my favorite treat every so often and a homemade puppy chow recipe is always more authentic than store-bought versions packed with unnatural ingredients. The following puppy chow recipe not only is easy to put together but also incorporates dark chocolate in place of the traditionally-used milk chocolate for a slight boost in my conscience. Enjoy!
Dark Chocolate Puppy Chow Recipe
- 8 cups Chex cereal (or similar natural version)
- 1 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup smooth peanut butter
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a double broiler over high heat. Stir continuously as the mixture melts. Once completely melted and smooth, set aside and stir in the vanilla and salt.
Into a large bowl, add the Chex cereal. Pour the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter mixture over the Chex cereal and fold the mixture until all of the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
Sift the powder sugar over the Chex cereal while tossing it. You may need an extra set of hands for this part. Once the cereal is evenly dusted with the powdered sugar, transfer the puppy chow to the parchment paper-line baking sheet and let cool.
Once cool, store the mixture in an airtight plastic or glass container.
