Health Benefits of a Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte
When you make them at home, PSLs aren't just delicious – they're also healthier. Pumpkin is filled with health-promoting carotenoids, including some of our favorite antioxidants – alpha and beta carotene – that may help reverse sun damage and slow aging while preventing cataracts and tumor growth. The carotenoids also convert to vitamin A in the body, promoting healthy vision and proper immune function. The dark orange color means they're also rich in lutein, which has been found to be important for heart and prostate health.
Making this syrup seriously couldn't be easier, but it's a real cinch when you have the right equipment! - Prep Time
Pumpkin Spice Latte Syrup
- 1 ½ cups water
- 1 ½ cups sucanat (or ¾ cup honey for paleo)
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ cup pumpkin puree
Heat water and sucanat over medium-high heat, in a small to medium sauce pan, until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
Add cinnamon sticks and whisk in remaining ingredients. Heat for about 5 minutes to marry flavors.
Remove the cinnamon sticks, and pour the syrup into a mason jar or another cute jar like the Weck Tulip Jars above!
To make a homemade pumpkin spice latte, simply add about a tablespoon of syrup to a cup of coffee with cream (and top with homemade pumpkin pie spice for even more fall flavor!) This syrup can also be drizzled over ice cream.
