The line features 100% organic cotton designer T-shirts and accessories, to be followed later by a denim collection. Apparel will initially be available online and in stores in Seattle, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
“I design with my heart and emotions, whatever I am feeling,” says Christie, author of Woman: A Practical Guide to Loving the Skin You’re In.
“The motivation behind ‘Colored Girl’ clothing is to instill a strong sense of pride, self-love and equality in women of all ages,” she says. “The age-old stereotype is that ‘colored’ stands for just African-American women. But in actuality, every nationality of women the world over has a color to their skin, no matter what that color is. A colored girl can be someone viewed as beautiful. I want to remove the stigma.”
The proceeds from Christie’s clothing line will help support single mothers and impoverished families through her Infinite Love Foundation. Proceeds will also benefit literacy programs in Seattle.
“My true mission in life is to lend support to the underprivileged—to try to bring about positive change in not just the world, but also the environment,” she says. “To be honest, it is very difficult to narrow it down to just one cause."
