Instead of heading to the store for a jumbo size of plastic-wrapped, overly-processed candies to dole out to kiddies on Halloween, why not make your own? That way, you control the waste and the quality by discerning your ingredient list. If there’s a candy you love to buy, there’s a way to make it at home. Here are a few to get you started. If one of these doesn’t have you salivating, Google will give you a helping hand.
Peanut Butter Cups
Love Reeses? Then you’ll adore this recipe. You can try it with white, milk, or dark chocolate, and add nuts to the filling for a little crunch.
1 (11.5 ounce) package of organic milk chocolate chips
1 cup organic peanut butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
12 muffin cup liners
Place the muffin cup liners into a muffin pan.
Place half of the chocolate chips in a glass microwave safe container.
Microwave them for one minute. Remove, then stir.
Place them back in the microwave for one more minute.
Spoon the melted chocolate into the muffin cup liners.
With a spoon, draw the chocolate up the sides of the cup until coated.
Place it in the fridge until the chocolate becomes firm.
Mix together the peanut butter, sugar, and salt.
Divide the mixture evenly between the chocolate cups.
Melt the remaining chocolate in the microwave as you did before.
Spoon over the peanut butter to create the cap for the peanut butter cup.
Place it in the fridge until this chocolate becomes firm.
Dried Fruit Candies
You can often find the almonds and dried fruit at your local farmer’s market.
1 (11.5 ounce) package organic white chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped almonds
8 ounces of mixed dried fruit
Place the chocolate chips in a glass microwave safe container.
Melt the chocolate, and stir until smooth.
Add the fruit and almonds. Stir until well-coated.
Line a pan with waxed paper, and spoon out the candy.
Refrigerate until set. Then you can wrap it in the waxed paper.
It’s a classic for a reason. Find the best apples of the season at your local farmer’s market and enjoy!
6 apples, without stems
1 (14 ounce) package of individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
2 tablespoons milk (or your favorite nut milk)
6 craft sticks
butter (or margarine)
Push the craft sticks into the top of the apple to serve as the handle.
Grease a baking sheet with butter.
Place the caramels and milk in a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave for one minute, then remove and stir.
Place it back in the microwave for one more minute.
Then, coat each apple quickly in the caramel, and place them on the sheet to set.
