DIY Natural Dry Shampoo
You drag yourself out of bed and head to the mirror. Even though you washed your hair yesterday, the roots have gone to the dark (a.k.a. greasy) side. Immediately you regret hitting the snooze button two (three? four?) times. Now, there’s no time for shampooing, conditioning, drying, styling and the all around primping that comes with getting your tresses to shiny, soft perfection. The clock is counting down and you have 10 minutes to get ready. Period. But how are you going to get that hot mess of your hair looking acceptable—and fast?
Sometimes you just need a quick fix. Dry shampoo should be your go-to lifesaver when you don’t have time to wash your hair. It removes oil and griminess (no water needed) from your locks, leaving them oh-so soft.
So how do you get this hair miracle worker? Well, you could buy it. Not only would you get dry shampoo, you’d also get aluminum starch octenylsuccinate, fragrance and a host of other nasty chemicals lingering around your hair and scalp. OR, you could just choose from one of these natural ingredients:
- Cornstarch
- Baking soda
- Ground oats
Yep, that’s it! Any one of these cupboard bad boys will restore your mane to clean, smoothness. In fact, many commercial dry shampoos even contain cornstarch as a main ingredient. Give one of these three a try when you’re in a time crunch. Here’s how:
Directions
1. Sprinkle one to two tablespoons of the powdery substance of your choice onto your oily roots.
2. Scrunch the powder good and into your tresses using your fingers.
3. Comb out the powder (along with the dirt, grime and oil) using a fine bristled brush.
So simple. This homemade dry shampoo will take you two minutes to use—tops. If you want to add a bit of pep to your dry shampoo, put in a few drops of your favorite essential oil to about 1/2 cup of one of those three powdery substances. Make a batch using a repurposed container, preferably one with holes, such as a parmesan cheese or spice container. Then just shake it up and apply.
