5 Warming Drink Recipes to Keep You Cozy on a Cold Winter’s Night

For those of us not lucky enough to live in Hawaii, Cancun or the Bahamas, inevitably at some point in January or February, it’s cold outside. The kind of bone-chilling, ice-storm-causing cold that makes a person want to hibernate on the sofa drinking nothing but hot liquids–for months. And we’ve got the 5 best hot drink recipes to partake of on a cold winter’s night. No need to visit Starbucks, or even leave the house.

5 Hot Drink Recipes

1. Vegan Hot Cocoa

Everyone knows about hot chocolate, right? Well this is a special vegan version with less calories and no animals were harmed in the making!

Directions

Whisk cocoa powder and sugar in a mug. Add the vanilla extract and hot water. Meanwhile, heat up the almond milk on the stove or in a microwave. Pour into the mug and whisk until frothy. Variations: try almond or peppermint extract. Enjoy! Serves one.

2. Honeybush Tea

Honeybush (Cyclopia) is a flowering plant that only grows in South Africa. The leaves of the plant are roasted and dried to make an herbal tea that some say tastes similar to Rooibos, but with a much sweeter and lighter taste. The tea is naturally sweet, so no sweetener is needed.

Numi sells bagged honeybush tea or you can buy it in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs. This is one of those hot drinks you can drink all day with no added calories or caffeine.

3. Hot Toddy

And for an adult beverage, try a hot toddy. There are many recipes for a hot toddy, but I prefer one made with Earl Grey tea.

Directions

Heat water. Place the tea bag in a mug, pour boiling water over the bag and allow to steep for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag and add the honey and Scotch/whiskey. Squeeze the lemon slice to taste and use it as a garnish. Serves one.

4. Irish Coffee

Irish coffee is another great choice if you are looking for adult hot drinks. My favorite brunch place uses this recipe.

Directions

Combine coffee, Baileys and Irish whiskey in a mug. Top with whipped cream and a little garnish of creme de menthe over the whipped cream. Serves one.

5. Moroccan Mint Tea

Whenever we go out to our favorite Middle-eastern restaurant, I love to top my meal off with Moroccan mint tea. I also make it at home as well. It works well as a soothing bedtime warm drink. Numi also sells good quality Moroccan mint tea in both bag and loose form.

Pour boiling water over the tea bag. Steep to desired flavor and add the honey.
