12 Ridiculous National Food Holidays in 2014 You Shouldn’t Care About

What do tacos, candied orange peels and caesar salad all have in common?

They all have a day devoted to their celebration. In other words: food holidays. The tacos are on October 4th in case you were wondering.

It’s true, if there’s a food you love, there’s probably an entire day set aside in its honor, a moderately (highly?) ridiculous way of celebrating foods all year long. There is even an entire blog, Foodimentary, devoted to food holidays, gives a little background on each food on its specific holiday, as well as some general, trivia-friendly food history facts.

Seriously, whichever food you want to celebrate, there’s probably a day to do it. Since posting all of them would take up too much space (although you can get the full list if you want it), here are some of the most ridiculous that don’t deserve your attention, one for every month of the year.

January 28 – National Blueberry Pancake Day

There’s nothing ridiculous about blueberries in a pancake, but what should strike the common food lover about the absurdity of this day is: who has access to fresh blueberries in January?

February 22 – National Cook a Sweet Potato Day

I love sweet potatoes as much as the next person, but what’s odd about this holiday is that it’s meant to celebrate the cooking of the sweet potato. As opposed to all the other days when we just eat them raw?

March 30 – Turkey Neck Soup Day

If you’re going to eat meat, cooking snout to tail is a good way to go, but this does beg the question: is turkey neck soup really a thing? And if it is, shouldn’t we be celebrating it closer to Thanksgiving, when the turkey neck is probably most likely going to waste?

April 10 – National Cinnamon Crescent Day

I am certain that this holiday is meant to celebrate the ingenuity of industrial crescent rolls. But what is this, 1992?

May 11 – National Eat What You Want Day

Can’t you technically eat what you want every single day of the year?

1st Friday of June – National Doughnut Day

People are still eating doughnuts?

All of July – National Hot Dog Month

If you don’t know any better and are still eating hot dogs, you really ought to consider re-assessing your eating policies.

August 8 – National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

Well, actually, you should care about this one. Your neighbor could probably do with some zucchini.

September 5 – National Cheese Pizza Day

If you can’t be bothered to make more than a cheese pizza then you lack a bit of creativity. Unless of course that cheese is locally made by your friend with goats in the backyard.

October 10 – National Angel Food Cake

Airy, light and full of a whole lot of not much, it has always struck me as odd that people love Angel Food Cake. Can we move on please?

November 10 – National Vanilla Cupcake Day

Cupcakes don’t deserve their own day, much less vanilla ones.

December 30 – National Bicarbonate of Soda Day

Yes, someone devoted an entire day to celebrating baking soda. While very useful, isn’t this pretty much the most boring ingredient in the pantry? But I guess, when you consider a year of gluttonous food holidays, it’s probably a good way to relieve your heartburn.
