A Cat Cafe? Yes, You May Soon Find Yourself Here
Curling up on the couch with a mug of tea and a good book is the past time of many in the winter. And for some, that activity is even better if they have a cat curled up next to them.
But what if you don’t have a couch? Or even worse, don’t have a cat? Not to worry cat lovers, there’s a cafe for you. In fact, there are a lot of cafes for you: cat cafes. Yes, it’s a thing, and no, it does not involve Mittens ordering a double soy latte.
The first cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998, but it was the Japanese that really embraced the concept and are often referenced for their feline outposts. The concept is simple: you get all the benefits of having a cat – fuzzy cuddles – without the hassle of owning one (ahem, litter boxes). Over the last decade, nearly 150 cat cafes have opened in Japan, which makes sense in a country known for its tight living quarters. And of course, since in Japan the cat trend was getting a bit saturated, one cafe ended up adding in goats as well.
While some people may be rolling their eyes, others swear by the health benefits that cats bring, like lowering stress and cholesterol levels. Hold a cat, pet it, let it curl up on your lap, take a picture – these cafe cats are up for anything and the cafe visitor benefits in the process. Intrigued?
