An App for Finding Vegetarian Restaurants: The Humane Eating Project

Humane Project App

There’s an app for pretty much everything these days… but what about an app for animals and vegetarian restaurants?

America for Animals, a company based in San Diego, has recently launched a new iOS App, The Humane Eating Project, to help conscious consumers. The app does what it says on the box: those looking to locate humane, vegan and vegetarian restaurants throughout the country now have the capability to do so with one app. The app contains more than 16,000 restaurant names, Google map addresses and directions, and Yelp! reviews, curated to cater to a variety of humanely-minded diners.

Categories for sorting restaurants include vegetarian and vegan — fairly self-explanatory — but also veg-friendly, which indicates a restaurant with more than 20 percent of its menu catering to vegetarians, as well as humane friendly, for those omnivores who are interested in the quality of life behind what they put on their plates.

Perhaps best of all, users are rewarded for using the app — a social media structure allows similarly minded friends and contacts to share their favorites. You can even point out the not-so-humane on a “Watch List,” which tracks the use of non-friendly products like foie gras and shark fin and even allows the capability to start petitions to help these places change their ways… and warn their friends to stay away until they do.

America for Animals has decided to release this app to the public free of charge. As CTO Tim Drees says, “There are a lot of people out there who want to do the right thing but throw their hands up in the air because they don’t know how to go about it.” Now they do.
