New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had a neat idea. Make all taxi cabs hybrids. Hybrid taxis are better for the environment and each cab, there are 1,300 currently in use, saves the city $6,500 a year. But not everyone was excited about it.
The Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade filed suit to block the initiative. Citing “risks and dangers” associated with driving hybrid yellow cabs. Claiming hybrids cannot withstand the wear and tear of driving around the city that never sleeps.
As a result, a judge sided with the taxi companies and nixed Bloomberg’s proposal. The mayor was very disappointed by the decision. But never the quitter, Bloomberg has shifted gears. Now he’s offering financial incentives for taxi owners to buy hybrids.
