UK Goes Gaga for Ice Cream Made from Breast Milk

We recently reported on one NYU graduate student’s project tapping into mama’s milk in Pass the Human Cheese, Please.Well, it seems the trend is catching on: Ice cream purveyors in London have introdruced Baby Gaga – an ice cream flavor made from mother’s breast milk, churned with Madagascar vanilla and lemon zest.

Matt O’Conner, the founder of Ice Creamists, has introduced the “miracle of motherhood” on his menu, where it was an instant success, selling out in the first week.

Of course, a scoop comes at a price. Each serving of Baby Gaga at the Ice Creamists cafe in trendy Covent Garden costs $22.50 and comes in a martini glass. But the Ice Creamists pay too, $24 for 10 ounces of breast milk from donors they solicited in an ad, who were screened using the same criteria the UK Heath service uses to screen blood donors.

Not surprisingly, some people were unsettled by the new menu addition. So, acting on two complaints about a shop selling a food product from a human bodily fluid, the Westminster City Council ordered any remaining ice cream be seized while awaiting guidance from Britain’s Food Standards Agency.

Those of you who feel a bit squeamish about mother’s milk, heed O’Conner’s comments: “If it’s good enough for our children, it’s good enough for the rest of us,” he said, “Some people will hear about it and go yuck – but actually it’s pure organic, free-range and totally natural.” Would you give it a go?
